Latina women own 36 percent of all companies owned by minority women in America. In 2012, data showed that the receipts of Latina-owned businesses totaled $65.7 billion; this is an increase of 180 percent from 1997 to 2013. As of 2013, Latinas owned about 1 out of every 10 women-owned businesses.
Although feminists regularly cite the gender wage gap as a scourge holding back women in the workplace, in fact for Latinas, the gap is much worse. According to some estimates, Latinas earnjust 55 centsfor every dollar earned by non-Hispanic white men. Furthermore, the share of Latina women earning at or below minimum wage is actually increasing, tripling from 2007 to 2012, and contributing to an overall poverty rate of 27.9% —close to three timesthat of non-Latina white women. Currently, there are limited resources for Latina immigrants in the United States. If a worker is underpaid in one job, and their next job bases their new salary on previous salary, then workers who are more likely to face discriminatory pay at any given employment may face the cumulative effects of this discrimination throughout their careers.

In 2018, Hispanic women were 20 percent more likely to be overweight as compared to non-Hispanic white women. Among Hispanic American women, 78.8 percent are overweight or obese, as compared to 64 percent of non-Hispanic white women. Hispanic women are 2.2 times more likely to be diagnosed with stomach cancer, and 2.4 times more likely to die from stomach cancer, as compared to non-Hispanic white women. Both Hispanic men and women are twice as likely to have, and to die from, liver cancer than non-Hispanic whites.
Put another way, a Latina would have to be in the workforce for 57 years to earn what a non-Hispanic white man would earn after 30 years in the workforce. Unfortunately, Hispanic women are subject to adouble pay gap—an ethnic pay gap and a gender pay gap.
Age and family structure play important roles in women’s labor force participation, as well as employment opportunities. In addition to overt wage discrimination, the explained portion of the wage gap is largely caused by structural barriers that reduce Latinas’ expected earnings. The largest explained causes of the white-men-to-Hispanic-women gap include the segregation of Hispanic women into lower-paying occupations and lower-paying industries and the disparity in access to education and skills training for many Hispanic women . In addition to finding that unexplained wage gap for Hispanic women is greater than the aggregation of the absolute ethnic and gender effects, we also identify particular groups of Hispanic women at an even greater disadvantage.
From 1980 to 2004, the number of Latina medical school graduates per year jumped from 93 to 485. Latinas hold only 7.4 percent of the degrees earned by women, though they constituted 16 percent of the female population in 2012. Graduation rates for Latinas were at 31.3 percent in 2008, still significantly lower than graduation rates for white women, at 45.8 percent.
Comparatively, female business owners as a whole only increased by 20% during this same time period. These wage gaps in the workforce affect Latinas at every socioeconomic status, not just the working class.
Latinas Are Paid Less Than White Men For Doing The Very Same Jobs
But, even in professions with more Latina workers, they still are paid less on average than their white male colleagues.Figure Bshows the average wages of Hispanic women and white non-Hispanic men in the 10 most common occupations for Latinas. In every one of them, white men, on average, are paid more than their Latina counterparts. This gap narrows—but not dramatically—when we control for education, years of experience, and location by regression-adjusting the differences between workers. Using this method, we find that, on average, Latina workers are paid only 66 cents on the dollar relative to white non-Hispanic men. Vaccination efforts need to be scaled up in high risk populations especially those characterized by a fast growing birth rate, such as Latinos.
